Among the key findings: Annual shipment volumes for the PC Gaming hardware market in 2009 were over two times larger than the combined Wii™, PlayStation® 2, PlayStation® 3 and Xbox 360® console units shipped in the same period. This trend for the PC Gaming hardware market to outpace all console shipments combined is expected to continue through the forecasted period of the research. In addition, revenues from consumer PCs capable of gaming that shipped with a discrete GPU (excludes Netbooks and integrated graphics-based PCs) totaled approximately $54.6 billion in 2009 and are forecasted to grow to $61.3 billion by 2014. These revenue figures are based on an estimated 61.5 million PCs (Desktop and Laptops) shipped in 2009 that can largely be associated with PC gaming as a key usage scenario. The report also estimates the worldwide number of consumers gaming with discrete graphics solutions on their PCs (Desktop and Notebooks) to be 212.6 million for 2009 and expects this to grow to about 322 million by 2014. The report also includes detailed breakouts of various PC configurations (e.g. Basic, Mass Market, etc), by form factor and by geographic territory.
Interesting that many people game with on-board graphics. I guess if it works why spend the money right?

I don't know what games they could play with that kind of graphics. Watching a movie is good with it but not with playing games, unless they play the old 2D classic games.

Actually some of the onboard graphics in some of the newer PC's and laptops rivals that of the Xbox and PS3. I recently got a Toshiba laptop that has better output than my Xbox 360 that is connected to my 720p HDTV.

your GPU is probably a discrete chip, though. Integrated chips are getting BETTER, but they're not anywhere NEAR good enough for anything but the most casual gamers. And the GPU in the Xbox360 is the equivalent to an 8800GTX if I remember correctly. It's an AMD chip, but it offers similar performance.

And yet It seems as the software companies are putting less and less effort into making games for PC's,you can see this by walking through WalMart and Best Buy where they keep the PC software. You just don't see as much as you used to,It seems as they are focusing more on consle games.I just bought a G73JH ASUS laptop gamer (Core i7 ,8 gb ram ,ATI 5870 HD and 1080 LCD)Play awesome games, took it to Kent State U. in Ohio for a 4 day lan party just a few weeks ago and had no problems at all (did bring my computer also )When we were at the hotel we could join the servers at the lan and play also.

I like to own a laptop just like Bob. How long did the laptop operate before it becomes too hot for you to stop gaming? This is what I don't like with laptops because they easily heat up.There are many new PC games but the thing is that most of them are not good to play with. Some of which are just copycats of other games.

A friend of mine uses his Dell XPS m1770 for gaming, and he never has issues with it getting too hot, even after a few hours of gaming. Then again, I suppose it depends on the laptop.

I use a laptop cooler that has a 230mm fan,my son Rob has my old gamer laptop (ASUS G50VT)and uses a cooler also. The thing is when you get a laptop check the underside to see where the vents are so when you get a cooler the fan is located under the vent .With my sons we had to add and move fans.If people tell you a cooler didn't cool their lappy in most cases the fans weren't located under the vents. The worst thing you want to do with your laptop is set it on your lap and block the intake vents even if your just surfing the web(a cool running laptop will last a lot longer)The G73JH has had it's share of problems with its video card and LCD dying. So far I have been lucky, many of the G73 owners don't read the forums and go to ATI and download the latest drivers and start having all sorts of video problems.ASUS makes thier own video cards so you need to download ASUS drivers.I have had to RMA it because I updated the bios and lost my keyboard backlighting and in low light conditions you can't see the keys.It took a week for the RMA and they had to refalsh the bios and the KB firmware on the mobo.Come to find out it is a common problem happening to about 25% of the bios updates,it was a conflict of some sort with WinFlash 2.0 bios flashing utility. Sorry for rambling lack of sleep and too much work.

Nice to see another Asus user... :-)I have the ASUS G72Gx-A1 ... A nice desktop replacement with an Intel Core 2 Quad Q9000 installed.fJYto9CKaugI have been lucky with the video card though .. All the drivers from nvidia for the GTX260M have worked without a problem. And you are so correct using a laptop cooler is a must with gaming. I use a NZXT Black Aluminum Notebook cooler w/ 3 120mm adjustable fans... Without even trying I see about a 10 degree difference at the video card. It folds up and has a USB hub build in as a bonus. :-)http://www.newegg.co...N82E16834997340

That is the same cooler we have for my son and we added 3 40mm fans on the front that folds when not in use,we power it with a 5 volt 30 watt power brick so as to not fry his usb(or use the small adaptor that came with it.Got to love the REPUBLIC OF GAMERS laptop series

I think the problem with PC games is that they are so similar that people get tired of them. I know that is what happened with me. Sometimes they will come out with cool games and I will go buy them only to realize how much alike they are to other ones already on the market.

thats probably just because of online services like steam, and origin, and that shitty windows live thing etc

physical copies of pc games are going the way of the dvd, cd, tapes

what i dont like though is i have to upgrade my computer every few years while the damn xbox plays bad company 2 just as well as it can play the first halo
